The Newham Recorder buys 15,000 toys in Christmas Appeal

By Camilla Turner

The Newham Recorder’s Christmas Toy Appeal successfully met its target to buy 15,000 toys for underprivileged children in East London.

Together with local charity Community Links, the weekly Archant title has been running this annual Christmas Toy Appeal for the last 36 years. The aim is for every child in one of the UK’s poorest boroughs to receive a gift on Christmas morning.
“We’re delighted that there has been a fantastic amount of toys and gifts donated in such a short time,” said Malcolm Starbrook, editor of the Newham Recorder.
“This has made a huge difference to many children and families in Newham and we’re incredibly grateful for all our readers’ support and hard work.”
Local businesses, pubs and schools joined forces to raise money for the appeal. The 15,000 presents were delivered by festive Christmas bikers from four east London motorcycling organisations.
The Toy Appeal was set up in 1976 by Colin Grainger, the then editor of the Recorder, and Kevin Jenkins, founder of Community Links charity.
